Plaskett Report for May 1925

There were 21 nights during the month on which observations were secured, which just the average for the past six years. The quality of he seeing was poor though and a total of 110 plates was secured as compared with a general average for the month of 140. It must be remembered, though, that 2 nights long exposure were made on particular objects.

Assistant Director W. E. Harper observed 3 nights obtaining 38 spectra. He measured for radial velocity 34. Spent considerable time on theory of spse (sic) line in spectroscopic binaries suspecting a change in the star Boss 3511. Finally made a least-squares solution giving values of the elements for the past six years. Advanced curves of a few other spectroscopic binaries. Handled administrative duties in the absence of the Director.

Astronomer H. H. Plaskett worked on 5 nights. Obtained 2 long exposure spectra, 16 short exposures and spent over 6 hours experimenting with cylindrical lenses and collimator illumination. Day work – principally engaged in working out the theory of spectrophotometry applied to stellar spectra in preparation for obtaining the colour temperature of the hotter stars. Some work on nebular spectra.

Assistant Astronomer J. A. Pearce observed 7 nights and obtained 39 spectrograms. He measured 29 plates for radial velocity. Weekly clock corrections. Little work on statistics of spectroscopic binary systems.

Engineering Clerk W. H. Christie measured and reduced 23 spectrograms for radial velocity. Observed on 4 nights obtaining 12 plates. Worked on binary HR 6506. Worked on the card catalogue.

Astronomical Computer S. N. Hill measured and reduced for radial velocity, 39 plates of which number 6 were double lined and fuzzy.

Senior Clerk Typist Miss H. R. Keay handled the usual accounts, plates, correspondence and reports. Corrected the proof of Volume III, Numbers 5 and 6. Completed the new mailing list for printer.

Instrument Maker Foreman T. T. Hutchison assisted in observing on 14 ½ nights. Re-wiring of the guiding control box and other minor repairs to the telescope.
