Dennis Crabtree received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1982. After a PDF at UBC, he took a position at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), as manager of their data reduction facility. In 1986 he moved to HIA as the first hire for the new Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC). He joined the permanent staff of HIA in 1988. In 1989 he left HIA for a position at STScI but returned to HIA in 1990, becoming head of the CADC in 1993. In 1996 he was seconded to CFHT as the Senior Resident astronomer and was in charge of science operations. He returned to HIA in 2000 and was head of the Canadian Gemini office until April 2007 when he moved to Chile to be the Associate Director of Science Operation for Gemini. He returned to HIA in 2010 as a staff astronomer.

  • Dennis uses bibliometrics as a tool for evaluating the performance of astronomical observatories and maintains a database of refereed publications from almost 30 telescopes.
  • Dennis is the unofficial historian of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) and is working with an archivist to catalog and preserve DAO’s textual and visual history.
  • Dennis uses Virtual Reality for public outreach in astronomy and is also exploring the use of social VR as a means to make meeting and conferences both greener and more accessible

Director J. S. Plaskett of the DAO submitted monthly work reports to Ottawa. We have found in our basement copies of these reports for the period from December 1921 through 1933. These are being transcribed, with additional information inserted, and can be found at The Plaskett Reports
