Plaskett Report for February 1933

The month was again below the average for observing. On 11 nights with 65.2 hours, 60 plates were secured, as against the 14 year average for the month of 14 nights and 91.6 hours.

Approximately 113 persons visited the observatory during the month

Director J.S. Plaskett completed solutions for seven different groups for rotational term and compared these values with those of mean parallax for same groups. Determined dispersion in absolute magnitude and values of r π and of constant A.  Commenced solution of 252 O and B2 stars for third and fourth harmonics.  Usual correspondence and administrative duties.

[Plaskett spoke to students at UBC and at the Vancouver Institute in February, Ed.]

Assistant Director W.E. Harper observed on 2 nights, securing 27 plates. Measured for radial velocity 25. Calculated and charted galactic coordinates of about 1000 stars. Checked over positions and types of same from HD catalogue. Gave one seminar talk.

Astronomer J.A. Pearce worked 2 nights, securing 8 plates. Determined the photometric elements for the eclipsing variable MR Cygni. Deduced absolute dimension for the two eclipsing variables MR Cygni and GO Cygni. Gave one seminar talk.

[February 7 was Pearce’s birthday and the Victoria Daily Times noted it with this brief biography, Ed.]

Astronomer C.S. Beals observed three nights, obtaining 21 plates. Continued the preparation of publication of work on Wolf Rayet spectra. Prepared article on the Audibility of the Aurora for the Pacific Science Congress.

Astronomer F.S. Hogg Observed 3 nights, securing 4 plates. Measured 9 plates for radial velocity. Worked on intensities of lines in Z Andromedae and in planetary nebulae. Examined published observations of internal motions in planetaries.

Computer S.N, Hill measured band spectra and related computational work.

Clerk-Stenographer Miss L.M. Blake handled correspondence, reports, accounts, library assistance and typing addresses and articles for publication

Astronomical Assistant T.T. Hutchison assisted in observing on 9½ nights. Kept telescope in running order.

[While not officially on the staff, Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg, F.S. Hogg’s wife, was a respected astronomer in her own right. She spoke to the Victoria Chapter of the RASC in February, Ed.]
