Plaskett Report for January 1933

The month was very poor for observing. On 9 nights with 33.6 hours observing time 26 plates were secured. The fourteen-year average for the month shows 10 nights and 68.0 hours observing. The mirrors were resilvered at the beginning of the month but only two nights were of much use.

Approximately 117 persons visited the observatory during the month

Director J.S. Plaskett made new general solution for the K term, two components of the solar motion and for the rotational term and direction to the centre for four groups of the 853O to B5 stars, a normal equation of 11 unknowns. Also made separate solutions for the rotational term for seven other groups. Usual administrative duties.

Assistant Director W.E. Harper worked 2 nights, securing 15 plates. Measured for radial velocity 30 plates. Determined orbit of HD 210334. Revised orbit of Boss 5070. Silvering mirrors. One seminar and one outside lecture (Duncan)

Astronomer J.A. Pearce observed 1 night, securing 4 spectrograms. Measured 5 plates for radial velocity. Completed spectrographic orbi of HD 216014, obtaining absolute elements of the system using Huffer’s photometric elements. Worked on preliminary orbit for MR Cygni. Major part of month spent on computations in connection with Volume V, Number 4. Gave one seminar and two popular lectures outside.

Astronomer C.S. Beals observed for one hour on one night, obtained 1 plate. Made a determination of the distribution of energy in the Pickering series of He II in the Wolf Rayet star HD 192163. Prepared one seminar. Some work on the preparation of auroral observations for Pacific Science Congress.

Astronomer F.S. Hogg observed 5 nights, securing 6 plates. Measured 4 plates for radial velocity. Worked on space distribution of Cepheids. Band spectra in My stars and Z Andromedae. Gave one seminar talk.

Computer S.N. Hill did measurement and reduction of band spectra. Preparation of drawings for reproduction in observatory publications. Library assistance.

Clerk-Stenographer L.M. Blake handled accounts, reports, envelopes for spectrograms and typing of articles for publication. Proof reading Volume VI, Numbers 6,7,8. Library assistance

Astronomical Assistant T.T. Hutchison assisted in observing on 7½ nights. Installed buzzer beating seconds in dark and kept telescope in running order.
