Plaskett Report for September 1930

The month was about an average one for observing with 95 plates with 109 spectra were secured on 20 nights with a total observing time of 146.0 hours. The corresponding eleven-year average for the month is 20 nights, 164 plates, with a total observing time of 150.4 hours.

Approximately 2,136 persons visited the observatory during the month.

Director J.S. Plaskett – work in preparation for printing of the radial velocities of 521 stars and of a catalogue of radial velocities of O and B type stars. Collection of statistical data for the above and writing up the text. Handled the usual correspondence and administrative work.

Assistant Director W.E. Harper was absent from office during month, in attendance of meeting of AAS in Chicago and an annual leave

Astronomer J.A. Pearce observed 3 nights, obtaining 17 spectrograms. Prepared notes on Catalogue of Radial Velocities of O and B type stars and prepared descriptions of spectra and notes on O and B type stars observed at Victoria.

Astronomer C.S. Beals observed 7 nights obtaining 20 plates. Completed second determination of constants of optical wedge in region λ3900-4900. Gave one seminar talk.

Astronomer R.O. Redman read various papers on spectrophotometry and on stellar motions. Worked 5 nights, obtaining 38 plates. Measured 50 plates for radial velocity. Commenced preparation of new observation programme.

Computer S.N. Hill measured and reduced for radial velocity 27 B type spectrograms. Investigation of other periods for HD 185936. Work on radial velocity catalogue. Making solar motion graph.

Clerk-Stenographer Miss L.M. Blake handled correspondence, reports, accounts and spectra envelopes. Typing and preparing for printer Volume VI, Number 1.

Astronomical Assistant T.T. Hutchison assisted in observing on 16½ nights. Kept telescope in running condition.

Astronomer H.H. Plaskett worked one night securing one plate with 5 spectra. Standardizing plates. Gave one popular lecture. Left September 16.
